5 Ways to Stay Motivated This Winter

When the seasons change it suddenly becomes harder to get out and exercise. Winter fitness programs aren’t the easiest to stick to, but they’re imperative to your overall health and well-being.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at what you can do to stay motivated and successful with your winter fitness goals.

Go for just 30 minutes a day

If you’re an avid fitness guru you’re likely used to longer workouts. However, winter brings with it crowded gyms, less daylight, and harsh outdoor conditions. Going for a morning run in December is riskier due to the possibility of slipping on black ice.

So with all of that in mind, it’s recommended that if you’re having a hard time staying motivated with your usual rigorous fitness routine, you should instead focus on exercising for just 30 minutes a day. This is a short amount of time that can be spent at the gym, on the treadmill, or even building a snowman with your kids. The important thing is to stay active if you want to achieve your fitness goals.

Eat more healthy carbs

It’s long been known in the fitness world that serotonin, a chemical in your brain is directly related to increasing your mood. The diminished amounts of sunlight during winter, though, make this chemical less abundant and can cause you to feel more tired and hungry than usual.

So before the sun goes down, focus on eating healthy carbs to stave off binge-eating through unhealthy food at night. Doing this simple trick will do wonders for your overall fitness during the winter.

Learn to love snow

Are you addicted to workout out in the outdoors? The arrival of winter and snow can really put a damper on that for those who enjoy staying fit outside.
However, it’s easy to not let snow derail your regular winter fitness schedule. You just have to learn to layer up correctly, run at the right times of day, and use running shoes that have added grip or spikes to lessen the chances of slipping on ice.

You can even take up snowshoeing, which is a great calorie-burning activity that gets you out of the house and into the crisp, clean air of winter.

Set a big goal

Winter is a great time to train for warm-weather events, such as a marathon or mud run. If you switch from looking at your usual fitness routine to training for a bigger goal when the weather warms up, you’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to motivate yourself to work out.

Don’t love the couch

After a long day at the office, few things sound as tempting as laying on the couch watching TV. But you shouldn’t go home and change into your PJs immediately. Change into your workout clothes and force yourself to go do something active. This ensures you don’t get lazy with your winter fitness routine.

Staying fit in the winter isn’t as easy as other seasons, but it’s definitely worth it.
