Cranio-sacral therapy (also called CST, cranial osteopathy, also spelled Cranio-Sacral bodywork or therapy) is an alternative medicine therapy used by osteopaths, massage therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors, and occupational therapists.
A cranio-sacral therapy session involves the therapist placing their hands on the patient, which they say allows them to tune into what they call the cranio-sacral system. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the cranio-sacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
The practitioner gently works with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are said to be eased, the movement of cerebro-spinal fluid through the spinal cord is said to be optimized, and misaligned bones are said to be restored to their proper position.
Cranio-sacral therapists use the therapy to treat mental stress, neck and back pain, migraines, TMJ Syndrome, and for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Cranio Sacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
